What to Wear for Your Fall Beach Session

Fall at the beach is all about warm, earthy colors mixed with soft coastal tones. Choose outfits that coordinate rather than match exactly, and combine different textures and shades to give your portraits a natural, timeless look.

Colors that photograph beautifully:
Cream • Ivory • Camel • Rust • Terracotta • Mustard • Olive • Sage • Warm Brown • Dusty Rose • Muted Blue • Denim • Burgundy

For Mom
Flowing dresses, midi or maxi dresses, soft skirts, textured sweaters or lightweight cardigans photograph beautifully in the ocean breeze. Cream, rust, olive, dusty rose, camel, or warm floral prints are especially pretty at sunset.

For Dad
Neutral chinos or khakis paired with a cream, tan, olive, rust, muted blue, or soft plaid shirt work beautifully. Rolled sleeves can create a relaxed beach look. Avoid large logos and very bright colors.

For Girls
Soft dresses, textured knits, rompers, skirts, cardigans, and subtle florals work wonderfully. Think cream, rust, mustard, dusty rose, sage, or warm neutrals. Boots can work with the fall setup, while bare feet are beautiful for portraits closer to the water.

For Boys
Khakis, tan or brown pants, denim, henleys, button-down shirts, sweaters, or sweater vests work well. Cream, camel, olive, rust, muted blue, and warm plaid are great choices.

A few things to avoid:
Neon or very bright colors, large logos or graphics, everyone wearing the exact same color, and busy competing patterns.

The easiest rule:
Start with one person’s outfit—usually Mom’s—and build everyone else’s colors around it. Aim for 2–4 coordinating colors rather than matching outfits.
And because this is a fall beach session, you don't need heavy coats or winter clothing. Think cozy fall colors + light layers + beachy softness.

What to Wear
The best outfits are the ones that feel like you while also working beautifully together in photographs. Choose coordinating colors rather than matching outfits, and mix soft textures, layers, and subtle patterns for a natural, polished look.

Neutral and muted shades usually photograph beautifully, including cream, ivory, beige, camel, soft blue, sage, dusty rose, warm brown, muted green, denim, and soft pastels. For outdoor sessions, earthy colors and gentle tones often blend especially well with the surroundings.
For families, start with one person’s outfit and build the rest around it using 2–4 coordinating colors. Avoid large logos, neon colors, very busy patterns, and having everyone wear the exact same color.
Choose clothing that fits comfortably and allows you to move, sit, cuddle, and interact naturally. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
